HEAVY FRUIT

our pumpkin
deteriorates:

tendrils turn brown, large lobed
leaves twist, fall away

we wound its weathered skin;
our cantaloupe-colored gourd –
thick rind, edible flesh, many seeds –
lies in a stinking heap.

  1. This is kind of sad, but this is the way of food, especially pumpkins when they've been carved. A touch of reality here with wonderfully descriptive words.
